Kazan (Volga Region) Federal University

Kazan Federal University is one of the oldest universities in Russia, which was created in 1804 on the basis of an affirmative letter and the Charter, signed on 5(17) November 1804 by Emperor Alexander I, as the Imperial Kazan University. By the decree of the Central Executive Committee of the USSR of 26 January 1924 and the decision of the Presidium of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee of the Soviets of Workers, Farmworkers and Red Army Deputies on 29 June 1925, the university was renamed into Ulyanov-Lenin V.I.

By the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation of 30 July 1996 No. 1112 Kazan State University named after Ulyanov-Lenin V.I. is included in the state list of highly valuable objects of cultural heritage of the peoples of the Russian Federation.

The Decree of the President of the Russian Federation No. 1172 dated 21 October 2009 contains a decision to establish the Volga Federal University on the basis of Kazan State University.

Kazan Federal University is one of the nine pivotal Russian federal universities, the oldest classical multidisciplinary university that educates highly qualified specialists in higher education programs (bachelor's; specialist’s, master's degrees), educates highly qualified personnel (training programs for scientific and pedagogical personnel) and additional education that performs fundamental and applied research across a broad spectrum of sciences and leading extensive research programs.

KFU is one of the three best classical universities in Russia and one of the twenty strongest universities in the country.

KFU develops and implements effective mechanisms of cooperation with leading universities, world and Russian companies in the development of the necessary educational resources for new educational programs of the world level.

In 2013 Kazan Federal University became one of fifteen winners of an open competition for state support of leading universities in order to increase their competitiveness among the world's leading research and educational centres (5/100 Program). In October 2016 KFU became one of 23 universities in the world that received 4 stars according to QS Stars.
