The Russian Regions and Sustainable Development Goals program has been implemented by the United Nations Russian Association with the support of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 2009. This is a unique project that creates a precedent for “oncoming movement”, when not only organizations and representatives of the UN system form an international opinion on the situation in Russian regions, but also Russian regions come up with initiatives in a global dimension and can shape international policy.

The Sustainable Development Goals are a set of 17 interrelated goals developed in 2015 by the UN General Assembly as "a blueprint for a better and more sustainable future for all". These goals were named in the resolution of the General Assembly "Agenda for the period up to 2030" and they replaced the Millennium Development Goals. The final document of the General Assembly "Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development" contains 17 global goals and 169 corresponding tasks.

The Sverdlovsk Region deservedly enjoys the reputation of an important business center open to broad international cooperation. The world's largest companies are successfully operating in the region, trade relations have been established with partners from more than 150 countries of the world. The December report “On achieving the sustainable development goals in the Sverdlovsk Region” specifically mentions the contribution of the Humanitarian University, which is very valuable for us.

Goal 16: Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, ensure access to justice for all, and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.

Interethnic and interfaith peace is ensured in the Sverdlovsk region. More than 160 nationalities live in the region.

More than 6,500,000 non-profit organizations operate on the territory of the Sverdlovsk Region, of which: more than 3,000 public associations (including more than 60 regional branches of political parties, 22 national-cultural autonomies), more than 750 religious organizations and about 3,000 other NGOs.

In the Sverdlovsk region, there is the oldest in Russia institution of the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman). The Ombudsman actively cooperates with UN structures. Three universities successfully operate in the region, which are members of the consortium on human rights in the Russian Federation with the support of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (Ural Federal University, Ural State Law University and the Humanitarian University).
