Ural State Law University named after V. F. Yakovlev

Ural State Law University is one of the largest centres for training of legal personnel in Russia. The history of the Ural State Law University dates back to the first quarter of the 20th century. The University was founded on 15 September 1918 by the Decree of the Council of Ministers of the Siberian Government as the Faculty of Law as part of the Irkutsk State University.

By the resolution of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee of 20 April 1931, the Siberian Institute of Soviet Law was formed in Irkutsk, which was transferred from Irkutsk to Sverdlovsk in 1934, and in 1935 it was renamed into the Sverdlovsk Law Institute, and later – the Sverdlovsk Law Institute. It was under this name that the university became known as one of the leading centres of legal education and science in the USSR.

Years from 1960 to 1970 became for the institute the years of dynamic development in training of scientific and pedagogical personnel, in the matter of radical change and improvement of research work, improvement of the educational process and expansion of the material base.

On 4 December 1992, the institute was renamed into the Ural State Law Academy. The Academy managed to preserve and multiply the achievements of the Soviet period and reach new levels of development. In April 2014 the Ural State Law University was renamed into the Ural State Law University.

Today USLU continues to be one of the largest centres for the development of legal science and the training of highly qualified legal personnel in Russia. Currently, the University combines the best traditions of classical legal education and modern educational technologies. Around 10,000 students study at the University at the moment. Students are educated by more than 600 professors, of which: 77 are doctors habilitatus, more than 300 of candidates of sciences, as well as honorary workers of higher professional education of the Russian Federation, honoured scientists of the Russian Federation, honoured workers of higher education of the Russian Federation, honoured lawyers of the Russian Federation. In the ratings of universities of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, the University constantly wins prizes.

Ural State Law University is the organizer of traditional scientific and methodological conferences: the All-Russian Student Scientific and Practical Conference "Evolution of Russian Law”, the “Ural Forum of Constitutionalists”, “Alekseev’s Readings”, “Days of International Law”, “Kovalevsky’s Readings”. For several years, the University has been the base university of the All-Russian open competition of student research papers in jurisprudence, held by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation. Since 2007, the Russian Bar Association has been holding the Eurasian Legal Congress on the basis of USLU, which has become an authoritative and internationally recognized forum for a broad exchange of views on the entire range of legal issues, for a comprehensive discussion of topical issues of legal development of the entire Eurasian legal space.
