Her speech was a position on a fictional case in a moot court hearing of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). Since the team of the master's student represented the interests of the defendant (the state), the position, like the speech itself, was based on arguments in its defence. Aisylu's task was to win the judge and jury over to its side, convincing them that the state did not violate its obligations under the 1950 European Convention on Human Rights. The applicant argued the opposite, represented by the company, which believed that its rights and the rights of its workers had been infringed upon by the defendant, and whose position was defended by a team from Yekaterinburg. Both teams were asked questions on knowledge and understanding of the case and law under the European Convention on Human Rights during the presentation.

“The judgment was passed by five judges. Among them are Council of Europe lawyer Anastasiya Shadarova, British barrister Bryce Dixon and American Judge Michael Losavio. Both sides had twenty minutes to speak. The teams consisted of three speakers. In addition, the model was conducted in English, and we drafted two written legal positions before the oral presentation in Perm, the so-called “memorial”, for the applicant and the defendant.

I can say for myself that this trip allowed me to learn a lot about public international law and the protection of human rights, and in to top all that, I met like-minded people who, just like me, are interested and passionate about international law and are concerned about the problems of human rights protection. It was a week full of master classes and lectures from Russian and foreign lawyers, we took part in the “ECHR MODEL” competition. I believe that this is one of the most useful experiences that I gained during the summer school, since this competition gave me the opportunity not only to comprehend on a theoretical level all the subtleties of human rights protection with the help of such a mechanism as the ECHR, but also to see it from the practical side, in 3D so to speak”, Aisylu Latypova stated.
