III Summer School on Human Rights (2015)

The III Summer School on Human Rights was held on the basis of the Kazan (Volga Region) Federal University from 22 to 26 June 2015, organized as part of the project of the interuniversity Master's Program “International Protection of Human Rights”, which has been successfully implemented since 2009 by the Consortium of Russian Universities (RUDN, MGIMO of the MFA of Russia and RGGU, since 1 September 2013 – Kazan (Volga Region) Federal University and Perm State National Research University have joined the Consortium, since 21 October 2014 – Ural State Law University, Yekaterinburg Humanitarian University, Ural Federal University and Voronezh State University). The program is being implemented with the support of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the Ministry of the Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. RUDN University – as the leading university of the Consortium, hosted students of the 1st and 2nd Summer Schools on Human Rights.

Theme of the 3rd Summer School if 2015 was “International protection of economic, social and cultural human rights in conflict and post-conflict situations”. More than 150 listeners (including master’s student of the program “International Protection of Human Rights” of the Department of International Law of the RUDN University A. Moiseyev, V. Chervonikova, A. Yavdoschuk and J.-B. Bukuru) attended lectures and practical classes of prominent specialists in the field of human rights, such as: UN experts, staff of the UN OHCHR, professors of universities-members of the European Inter-University Centre for Human Rights and Democratization (EIUC), professors and leading lecturers of the international law departments of Russian universities, prominent Russian human rights activists and representatives of non-governmental organizations. The summer school was attended by lecturers: N. Khaidar (member of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women), R. Komenda (Senior Advisor on Human Rights of the UN system in the Russian Federation), D. Mukhamadieyv (head of the regional office of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Russia), D. Choudhry (lawyer of the International Network for the Protection of the ESCHR), L. Mingazov (Doctor habilitatus (law), Prof., Head of the UNESCO Chair for Human Rights and democracy, KFU), V. Gefter (prominent human rights activist, director of the Institute of Human Rights) and others.

On 25 and 26 June, students attended two sections (optional): “Economic, social and cultural rights of vulnerable groups” and “Protection of economic, social and cultural rights in armed conflicts and post-conflict situations”. Lectures, seminars and interactive games were held within each of the sections. The moderator of the section “Economic, social and cultural rights of vulnerable groups" was the assistant professor of the Department of International Law of the RUDN University Ye.S. Alisiyevich, who also presented reports on the topics: “The category of vulnerability in modern international law” and “Protection of the economic and social rights of the elderly people). The moderator of the section “Protection of economic, social and cultural rights in armed conflicts and post-conflict situations” was U. Mammadov, Candidate of Legal Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of International and European Law at Kazan Federal University.

Within the framework of the Summer School, a competition “Model of the European Court of Human Rights” was also held with the participation of teams from Russian universities of the Consortium. The competition was held in English, and its finale took place in the building of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Tatarstan. Participants of the Summer School took active part in the photo competition “Universal Declaration of Human Rights”, the results of which were summed up on 26 June 2015 at the closing ceremony. A scientific and practical round table “Methodological support for training personnel in the field of human rights protection” was also held within the framework of the Summer School, during which the Ombudsmen of various regions of Russia, including the Ombudswomen in the Republic of Tatarstan S.Kh. Saburskaya, in the Perm region – T.I. Margolina and in the Voronezh region – T.D. Zrazhevkaya. All participants of the Summer School received participation certificates.
